Spring Workshop – 19th March 2025

Largs Horticultural Society Flower Show\ Largs Horticultural Society Flower Show\ Largs Horticultural Society Flower Show

A very busy and enjoyable evening was had by all at our Spring Workshop. Ian Taylor started off the hands on demonstrations with seed sowing – giving lots of handy hints and tips to give your seeds a really good start. Hugh Gibson, a very reknowed local gardener and cup winning exhibitor, brought not only his knowledge but his dahlias and fuchsias along showing the audience how to propagate the plants and the reasons behind his methods. He also discussed plant feeding regimes and invited the audience to take any cuttings they wanted during the break. A question and answer session followed.

During the break attendees were invited to pick up their free grab bags of seeds and potatoes and to help themselves to the array of seeds, plants and summer bulbs, and potatoes on the benches, most of them being of show standard. Tomato seedlings (grown by a member), which on offer to those who would like to have a go growing them on, quickly went together with the parsley seedlings.

The evening was rounded off with the ever popular pulling of the raffle much to the delight of the audience who carried off, amongst other prizes, a beautiful azalea and the large hamper of goodies.

The Society give their thanks to all those who attended evening, to Ian and Hugh, our demonstrators, to our Committee members and helpers for preparing, setting up and helping on the evening and to all those who supported the evening with donations of seeds etc - Cardwell Garden Centre for seeds, Morrison’s Largs for the wonderful hamper, Rowan Tree at Haylie Stores for potatoes and the azalea, Suttons Seeds for seeds and members for their donations of seeds, plants and potatoes.

A great night was had by all.

Ian Taylor’s retiral as President

Largs Horticultural Society Flower Show\ Largs Horticultural Society Flower Show

At our last AGM Ian Taylor announced his retiral as President and following nominations the new President was appointed - Etta Strachan.

Ian Taylor had been President for 22 years and during that time, as well as lead the Society, he carried out many roles sharing his knowledge of horticulture in demonstrations, talks, plant sales, school and garden visits and at the Flower Show. He also judged vegetables at other shows.

At a recent meeting Ian Taylor passed on the President’s Chain (Badge of Office) to Etta. The President’s Chain dates back to 1957 and was presented to the Society by former Provost Albert Stone.

Etta gave thanks to Ian, on behalf of the Society, and was pleased to announce that Ian will remain on the Committee and will participate in our upcoming events.

Largs Flower Show 2024

Show Report

On a day of sunshine and heavy showers the Largs Flower Show once again welcomed visitors on Saturday 24th August 2024.

After a difficult growing season, heavy rain and high winds on the days before the show, Largs & District Horticultural Society, who stage the show every year, were delighted to see that the quantity and quality of exhibits compared favourably with previous years.

A steady stream of visitors were treated to a colourful spectacle of flowers , pot plants and vegetables. The Floral Art exhibits reflected artistic talent and imagination. Also on display were mouth- watering examples of home-baking, including a special Decorated Cake class sponsored by West Coast Cakes and displays of Hobbies and Crafts. Budding talent was also in evidence in the variety of exhibits in the Schools, Nursery and Junior sections. The Society were particularly pleased at the large number of first-time exhibitors and look forward to welcoming them back to next year’s and future shows.
